Our Campaign
Save the Giant Goram was established in 2020 to fight the demolition of the Giant Goram Pub after its owners applied to turn the site into housing. We were inspired by community-owned pubs across the country, which are shining examples of vibrant community spaces, run for the benefit of local residents.

We contacted the Plunkett Foundation to help us develop an alternative vision. saving the Giant Goram for the local community as a social space, and as much more than a pub.

We successfully fought the owners application and appeal, and the Planning Inspector ruled in 2021 that:

To my mind the Giant Goram has to be defined as a community facility. It is the last of the original five pubs in Lawrence Weston, a community that has also lost many of its other facilities. I am also aware that further housing in the community is due to be developed in the near future. It has not been shown that there is no longer a need to retain the pub and alternative provision has not been made. T

What happens next?
In 2022 we registered a Community Benefit Society called The Lawrence Weston Community Pub CBS Ltd.
This means we can fundraise and create a community share offer in the future., so that local residents and people from the wider area can buy shares in the project. Then we will be able to purchase the pub from its current owners. All shareholders would get to vote and stand for election for the management committee.
